The Residential Fire Sprinkler Mandate

The International Code Council (ICC), the leading building code body in the U.S., passed a building code requirement to include residential fire sprinklers in new homes during a code hearing in Minneapolis on Sept. 21, 2008.

Now, all model building codes require installation of fire sprinklers in one- and two-family dwellings per the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 13D Standard or Section P2904 of the International Residential Code (IRC).

About the International Code Council (ICC)

The ICC, a membership association dedicated to commercial and residential fire safety and fire prevention, develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. Most U.S. cities, counties and states that adopt codes choose the International Codes developed by the ICC. They are dedicated to developing a single set of comprehensive and coordinated national model construction codes.

Implications of the ICC Vote

The code proposal, RB64, was passed by the ICC with 73% of members in favor. As a result, the following phrase is included in the 2009 International Builders Code: “Effective January 1, 2011, an approved automatic fire sprinkler system shall be installed in new one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses in accordance with NFPA 13D”.

The ruling encouraged many jurisdictions around the country to quickly join the cities, counties and communities who had already proactively adopted fire sprinklers as part of their residential building codes.
